FROM TOOTH REMOVAL TO BIOPSY
Tahunanui Dental Centre can help you with removal of unrestorable teeth and wisdom teeth, orthodontic extractions, as well as the biopsy of suspicious lesions and periodontal [gum] surgery. Where there are complicating factors, you may be referred to one of our trusted Specialists such as an Oral surgeon or Periodontist, or to Nelson Hospital Dental Department.
DIAGNOSIS FIRST
Before any oral surgery is decided upon, proper diagnosis is essential.
However sometimes a biopsy is required to aid the diagnosis and eliminate other possibilities.
Careful examination, radiography [x-ray imaging] when appropriate, are
followed by discussion of treatment options including referral.
TYPES OF ORAL SURGERY
Tooth extractions including wisdom teeth. Extraction of crowded or malformed teeth for orthodontic reasons. Biopsies. Periodontal [gum] surgery. Extraction of teeth and fitting of immediate dentures. Extraction of retained tooth roots. Post-operative treatments such as control of excessive bleeding and suture removal.
The above-mentioned services can often be provided by us.
The more complex procedures listed below would be referred to the appropriate specialist or Nelson Hospital:
Fixation of facial fractures, jaw reconstructions [orthognathic surgery], implant fixture placement, periodontal flap surgery, root apicectomy, treatment of oral, head and neck cancers.
REFERRAL
Sometimes it is appropriate for patients to be referred for surgical procedures, for example deeply impacted wisdom tooth removal, or for treatment of lesions suspected of being malignant.
